Lettré japonais, Okakura Kakuzô est né né le 14 février 1862 à Yokohama (Japon). Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages en anglais destinés à faire connaître la culture classique sino-japonaise aux occidentaux: Les Idéaux de l'Orient, Le Réveil du Japon et son livre le plus célèbre, Le Livre du Thé. Il est mort à Yokohama le 2 septembre 1913.
