Née en 1944 à Eatonton, Georgie, Alice Walker est la fille d'un métayer et d'une femme de ménage qui encourage sa vocation littéraire. Après une enfance miséreuse, émaillée d'épreuves, elle entre à Sarah-Lawrence, une des universités les plus réputées des États-Unis. À la fin des années 1960, Alice Walker s'établit dans le Mississippi pour y enseigner. Elle y publie en 1968 son premier recueil de poèmes, Once, et s'occupe activement de la cause des Noirs. En 1970, elle publie son premier roman
