Née dans le Somerset en 1900, Elizabeth Goudge est une romancière anglaise qui fut élevée dans l'austérité par son père professeur de théologie à Oxford. En 1923, elle se mit à l'écriture et se fit connaître avec les livres pour enfants et les biographies pieuses, avant de se consacrer à la littérature avec notamment L'Arche dans la tempête et Le Pays du Dauphin Vert. Elle mourut en 1984, laissant derrière elle une oeuvre animée par les violences et les contradictions des sentiments et par la rudesse des campagnes isolées de l'ouest de l'Angleterre.
